The Gear – GRVL bib shorts

When gravel riding first started to become popular, one of the attractions for many riders was the “anything goes” attitude and this seemed to particularly apply to clothing. Cut-off denim shorts and a lumberjack shirt? Hell yes. Enduro MTB kit? No problem. Full lycra-fest? You bet. Now, a few years on, things have gone a little more mainstream, but there is still a split between all-lycra and all-baggies. What if you want a halfway house? Then GRVL’s bib shorts might be just the thing you’re looking for.

Not everyone wants to look like a full-blown roadie when out on a gravel ride, but everyone wants to wear a pair of shorts that are comfortable and which fit properly. GRVL’s bib shorts offer the ideal compromise – a lycra under-short, fitted with a high-quality CyTech chamois and a “tailored microlite over-short”. They come with an impressive range of technical features – two rear storage pockets, bonded and lazer-cut seams, hidden silicone leg gripper and reflective elements. GRVL have a very strong environmental ethos to the products they produce, describing themselves as having a “sustainable approach to gravel cycle apparel”. Their bib shorts fit perfectly with this, using “recycled ocean plastic polyester” as one of the main components in the fabric from the which the shorts are constructed.

GRVL describe their bib shorts as being “Engineered for adventure. Our 2 in 1 gravel bib shorts incorporates a traditional compressive bib short with a tailored microlite over-short to provide additional protection from the elements, dust and mud.” The fabric used in the construction of the shorts is described as being “water resistant, breathable, fast wicking, stain resistant, fast drying and sustainable.”

GRVL’s bib shorts are available in black or navy and in size small/medium/large/x-large. They cost £185 and you can get a free GRVL (recycled ocean plastic) bidon filled with delicious Chimney Fire coffee beans when you spend more than £100 with them.
