Gravel Inspiration - Getting started with bikepacking: an adventure for everyone

If you search for a definition of what bikepacking is, you’ll probably find something like this “It’s a mix of all-terrain cycling and backpacking. It evokes the freedom of backcountry hiking and travel off the beaten path but with the added range, quicker pace and thrill of riding a nimble bicycle.” Now you know what it is, how do you get started? Nunziella and Alessandro from The Bike Challenge are here to point you in the right direction.

Bikepacking, the art of combining cycling and backpacking, might seem intimidating, but it's surprisingly accessible to beginners. One of the greatest things about bikepacking is its flexibility; trips can be both long and short, so you could travel the world full-time or enjoy a week-long adventure closer to home. You don't need to embark on an epic expedition to experience the joy of it. You can start exploring your local area, either solo or with friends. In fact, I'd encourage you to start exploring locally and gradually venture further afield. Remember, it's not the destination but the journey that matters.

Like any adventure, bikepacking has its challenges, but that’s part of the fun. It's important to embrace the unexpected, stay positive, and make informed decisions. Weather can be unpredictable, but encountering bad weather is no problem. simply shorten your trip and plan a better adventure next time. Navigation can also be tricky, but don't worry, there's always a Plan B. Utilizing tools like a combination of Komoot, a phone, and a GPS unit can be helpful. And most importantly, remember that you can always find a solution or ask for help along the way.

Finding your first route

For those looking for route inspiration, there are fantastic options available. In the UK, I'd recommend trying the Rebellion Way, Cantii Way, or East Wolf Way, all from the We Are Cycling UK website. For those dreaming of international adventures, consider the routes from London to Paris, London to Bruges, or London to Amsterdam. Regardless of your location, I'm confident that there are suitable routes for beginners in every country.

The bikepacking community

The bikepacking community is incredibly welcoming, and with its growing popularity, inspiration is everywhere. There are numerous resources available to help you plan your trips and connect with other riders. You can:

You can also create your own routes using tools like komoot or join organised bikepacking events to meet like-minded individuals and share the adventure together.

Finally, you could consider joining an organised bikepacking trip. Wild Cycles offer a range of trips which include support – ideal for anyone considering trying bikepacking for the first time.

Gear up without breaking the bank

When preparing for your first bikepacking trip, it's essential to have the right gear. The top five items you need are:

  • A well-maintained bike.
  • Bike bags.
  • Essential tools, spare parts and a first aid kit.
  • Navigation tools ideally a smart phone or bike computer.
  • Food and water.

However, don't let the cost of gear be a barrier to entry. You don't need to spend a lot of money to start your first adventure; you can buy second-hand bags and equipment or borrow from friends. The key is to make sure you're truly passionate about bikepacking before investing in new and expensive gear.

The journey is the reward

Ultimately, bikepacking is about the experience. As my motto goes: It's not the destination, but the journey that matters. It's about the opportunity to go out, explore nature and history, and meet people along the way. It’s about sharing your experiences, creating unforgettable memories, and returning home feeling enriched by the journey, with time to reflect and learn.
